Mazda 6

Three petrol engines are available: 1.8-, 2.0- and 2.3-litre units producing 118-, 145- and 164bhp respectively, and the two larger ones offer decent go; the 1.8 feels out of breath on motorways. There are two Mazda 6 2.0 turbodiesels developing 119- or 141bhp. The lower-powered diesel is our pick of the range. There’s also an MPS performance version (see Hot Hatch section).

Mazda 6 MPS - Not all its cracked up to be looks wise think I would prefer something more sport looking for my money. When you take a good gander at the rear of the MPS you will find two flat oval tailpipes that look rather nice but on closer inspection it revealed that they were simply false finishes! They are in fact quite embarrassing excuses for exhasusts.

Fake pipes apart, if you’re a Q-car purist, you’ll regard the Mazda 6 MPS as a masterpiece of deception, for beneath its Clark Kent exterior sits a turbocharged 256bhp, 280lb ft engine, a six-speed gearbox and an all-wheel-drive chassis. On second thoughts, forget the Superman analogy; this car is so unassuming that it resolutely wears its pants on the inside of its trousers at all times. With a vest. Tucked in, of course.

There are 785 engineering changes to the face lifted Mazda 6. But most of them are hidden from sight. Thankfully Mazda hasn’t messed around with its dramatic looks. Just a few small improvements there. Instead, Seichi Omoto’s team has concentrated on the really important bits.
